She has two sets of twins. That's right- TWO SETS. As a twin mama myself, I bow down to her for this fact alone. But it turns out there is even more to Gabrielle's story and I honored that she decided to share some of that here... and a little bit about her lovely e-assist cargo trike, too.

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif; font-size: large;">I’m Gabrielle, the mother of five kids (including two sets of
twins) and I’m new to cargo biking. We own a bakfiets style trike made by Oak
Cliff bikes in Dallas, TX.

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif; font-size: large;">I can’t
remember where I saw the bakfiets style bike in use, probably in the
Netherlands. I always thought they were awesome. Then one day stumbling around
the internet while searching something like “dutch bike for many kids”, I
learned about Emily Finch. Then I read Sara’s blog and watched “Less Car More
Go” about 90 times.

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif; font-size: large;">But since I live in Central TX, the conversations went like
this, “a bak-what?” This is an
area where the car is king. I spent many hours after learning about cargo bikes that there are none to be found in Central TX. I searched Craiglist and
checked out bikes shops in Portland and on the East Coast with no luck. Finally
someone told me about Oak Cliff Cargo bikes in Dallas. The rest as they say is
history.

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif; font-size: large;">My husband thought I had lost my mind. My goal was to bike
our kiddos three blocks to the local elementary school (by myself) and return. I’m
from PA, and grew up in a college town with dedicated bike lanes and I
desperately wanted biking to be part of my life. I was used to walking or riding every place I wanted to go. I
want my children to know that they can physically go places by themselves at
their own pace. We retire this
spring and are moving back east. The Army will move my bike (at no cost to me)!
Win all around. The only problem was my husband had concerns about my ability
to ride a bike.

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif; font-size: large;">You see, in 2006, I fell out of a helicopter in Iraq. Luckily
for me it was not a combat injury, just an accident in a combat zone on the
last day of my deployment (because it couldn’t be the first day naturally).
Long story short, I now have a spinal stimulator in my spine. I had to give up
my last bike, a nice folding Dahon because it was too much for my back. How was
I going to pedal four kids in a heavy wooden box? Enter Jonathan, the owner at Oak
Cliff, who added an electric assist to the bike. It makes all the difference <span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif; font-size: large;"><span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">in the world for
me as the electric help takes all the pressure off the base of my
spine. It has given me many new opportunities to interact
with nature, my children, and my community.

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif; font-size: large;">Biking allows you to interact with people and the world
around you. It draws people to you in a way that cars can’t. On a bike, I am
approachable (once you get past the four squalling children). One time a woman pushing newborn twins
in a stroller chased me down two blocks to ask about it. People love my bike and
they tolerate me schlepping four kids in it.
Interestingly, we have a contingent of Dutch soldiers here at Fort Hood
(Air Cavalry, I believe). They often bike their kids to school. The love the
bike and offer tips. They even can pronounce “bakfiets."
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif; font-size: large;">I’ve had some wobbles with
it (I learned that the sidewalk with the benches are too narrow to navigate and I should stick to the car drop off lane). Fathers have pulled me out of the
mud. Women congratulate me. People wave and smile. My
children will meet people who embrace our nontraditional
transportation. We learn about the weather and we learn about each other (my
girls HATE their helmets). It is a source of much joy. The kids love to ride in
the bike and I love that I can master it and it truly allows us to embrace life
on a different level.

She's a rescue from the South and yes, she's a tripawd (as the internet seems to deem some three-legged pups). We love her. She's sweet and loving and she is not at all hindered by having lost her front left leg just on July 1st. My boys like to boast that she's 'faster than many four-legged dogs.' So there.

We knew we needed to integrate her fully in our lives so we trained her to do this.

First we had the boys sit in the box with her. Since she's a *huge* fan of squirrels and we were worried that they'd tempt her too much, we decided to rig a harness system for her so she could ride on her own. We took out the bakfiets' folding front seat, used the hole openings, and screwed two short 'leashes' with clips to either side. We clip these to a body harness and she can sit and move around comfortably but she can't jump out upon squirrel sightings.

So this is how she and P get to work. But as the Kickstarter campaign for LESS CAR MORE GO is in its final week with $8,000 more to go to be funded, I feel like I would be remiss if I didn't say share why I think this documentary is important.

First, the non-bike part. I am not a filmmaker, but I do love films and yes, documentaries are particular favorites. Once, a lifetime ago, I flirted with the idea of going to film school. Instead, I became a teacher-- one who loved to create curricular connections between literature and documentaries. Then when P and I were finishing the Peace Corps, we were convinced that we should return to my area in the Philippines to create a documentary about this amazing country band at this local bar in Baguio called The Wild West. That never happened-- the bar sadly closed and I wonder what happened to those amazing musicians who loved American country music and could play it all, from the old school country stuff to the recent country stars. Their story would have been interesting to learn and document and I am sorry it didn't come to pass...

Anyway, back to LCMG-- filmmaker Liz Canning came up with this incredible idea for this documentary and it's not just about the bikes. She is creating a crowdsourced film where she called for footage from ordinary folks from all over the country and beyond. That means us non-filmmakers shoot video when out and about on cargo bikes, and we convince our friends who ride to let us interview them on camera. Then Liz watches hours and hours of all this video from all these many people and she is putting it together in one coherent story. It's an incredibly ambitious project and it's just really cool and I have no doubt that other documentary filmmakers will look at this example and come up with their own ideas for crowdsourced film projects. Liz's approach to this project speaks so much about the power of community. Crowdsourced and now crowdfunded. This film cannot happen without the crowd.

The other reason why LCMG is important is about the bikes and the families who ride them. I think back those six years ago when we were trying to figure out how to get kindergarten-aged twins to/from a school two+ miles away from our apartment and it just didn't seem right to use the car. Yet, they couldn't walk and they couldn't ride themselves and a bike trailer wouldn't work and there was no public transportation available for this route. There didn't seem to be a solution until one random weekend when a friend from another place whispered the word 'bakfiets' and we Googled it and suddenly-- Wow! This amazing machine. Look at these families on the web who were using these cargo bikes to transports kids and not just a single kid, but more than one kid. And the possibilities opened up to us-- possibilities that we didn't know existed before we heard the words 'bakfiets' and 'cargo bike' and saw those photos on the web and read the blogs of Travis, and Anne and Tim, Julian, and Matt.

So this is why LESS CAR MORE GO is important. It's about the possibilities. Other families who may not live in a place with a family bicycling culture can watch this film and think-- Well, maybe…. Maybe if that family does that, maybe we could. And it's also important for the families who already do ride their bikes as it's about community as well. Maybe that family also doesn't live in a place where others ride. They're the outliers-- maybe even the ones that other parents look at and even sometimes comment on "how crazy or dangerous they are to be bicycling with their children." Those bicycling families can look at this film and think-- Well, we aren't crazy. We aren't the only ones. There are other families like ours getting around their communities on bikes. As parents, we can feel unsure and we can hear criticism about our parenting choices pretty darn loudly and we can question ourselves and our choices. Seeing others out there riding with their kids feels good. This feeling of belonging is powerful.

Community. Possibilities. Belonging.

I hope the world gets to watch LESS CAR MORE GO. And I hope I do, too.

Liz is the real deal, people. A documentary filmmaker, mama of twins, and cargo bike enthusiast, you can tell just how much vision and time it has taken for her to put this campaign together. Imagine the hours combing through all of our submitted video footage and coming up with an engaging, cohesive story about how cargo bikes make our lives better. She's got interesting history and interviews in there and a bunch of regular folks who just like riding their cargo bikes.

Liz has also been working on this project, all self-funded, for the past three years. It's time. It's time. $40,000 is an ambitious Kickstarter goal, however, it is quite modest when talking about a film budget. It's been exciting to see how the cargo bicycling community has rallied around to support this film but we needs others to help us out. Please consider giving. Also, consider sharing this campaign far and wide.

Thanks so much and happy riding.

Late in August I made good on a promise to myself and presented at my
city's PechaKucha night about my love of cargo bikes. A fellow happened
to be filming it and he just posted it on video. There is a drop in the
sound for two slides but it does pick up...
Shout-outs to Travis Wittwer, Elly Blue, and Emily Finch who are a part of my PechaKucha. Thank you so much!
It's the biggest local group ride and it's been fun to watch its growth over the past years.

You can see posts about our participation in past years here, here, and here. I must admit that I am surprised to discover that I never blogged about last year's event even though we had friends from Brooklyn come up and join us.

This year was momentous because all three boys rode their own bikes for the entire ride. In the couple of years, we had hauled F on one of our cargo bikes, as well as his bike so he could ride the end himself, but he was ready to take on the whole route this go-around.

I must admit that I can find big group rides pretty nerve-wracking. With my children, I seem to be on them constantly about riding smartly and predictably so that other riders know what to expect from them. However, I wonder if some of my nagging is simply because there are tons of other riders out there riding unpredictably, making less-than-smart choices, but it's only my own kids I can actually say something to! Unfair, I know...

Bicycling friends, who recently moved to Maine from New Haven, came down for the weekend to hang and participate. I didn't end up making t-shirts this year but thought we should have some unifying theme going on for our crew. Without any rhyme or reason, I end up settling on making fake mustaches. I merely mentioned it at one point, perhaps inspired by this bicyclist, and F latched on to the idea and wouldn't let it go. So the night before the ride, we sat at the table making fake mustaches.

The result was pretty amusing.
No need to get into any helmet debates here.

I've written before about the people whom I meet while bicycling. There are one-time chance encounters and there are people we see daily whom we may have missed when driving. We certainly would have not interacted and chatted with them like we do now.

This spring I have been wondering about Ms. Essie. She lives/d in an apartment building on the corner of a busy-ish intersection where I stop often to wait out the red light. Ms. Essie and I would greet each other as she sat outside on a folding chair watching the happenings on the street. I saw Ms. Essie for multiple years. She would often say something kind about my boys when they were out riding with me and ask after them when they were not. These past months when I pass her building now, without her chair and her presence out front, I wonder if she moved or perhaps she's experienced a health issue that's kept her inside....

This morning, I was feeling a bit down. I decided to stop at my favorite coffee place for an iced latte-- so excited to have my mounted coffee ring back on my handlebars! Just when I was unlocking my Yuba Boda Boda, this fellow rode by and suddenly stopped to ask about my bicycle.

We ended up bonding over our bikes and cargo-carrying capabilities. His name is Ernest and he took a kid's bike trailer and turned it into a cargo trailer using heavy-duty plastic bins. He keeps his tools in the bins and anything else he needs throughout the day. He also mounted slim bags, including a neoprene laptop case to the sides of the bins so he can stash smaller stuff more securely.

He loved my Boda Boda and thought that not only could I carry a kid on the back tail but stick one up front in the big Bread Basket. He suggested that I paint my helmet apple green to match my bike. I shared that my sons would love his Jolly Roger flag.

After asking permission to take his photo, we shook hands and headed off our separate ways. I pedaled through downtown feeling far lighter than when I started my commute this morning. An iced latte and a chance encounter making my legs pedal with a bit more zing and my mood lifted.

My Yuba Boda Boda has a new accessory. Some weeks ago, we affixed a Bread Basket to the front, increasing our carry capacity quite a bit. While the size of the Bread Basket was great, the open slats made it impractical to carry a number of things, including my purse that would slip easily through the open spaces.

I remembered seeing a great blog post on a Simple Six about the custom Bread Basket liner cargo biking mama Nicole Nafziger had made. While my limited crafting skills do not extend to sewing (unfortunately), I thought of my friend Sara who recently started a new business called Thread Blossoms and she agreed to take on the custom job. Discussing fabric choices via e-mail, we choose heavy-duty outdoor fabric that would be fun and match the gorgeous green apple color of my Boda Boda.

My Bread Basket liner arrived at the start of this week and I am so thrilled with it. It affixes easily with ties and contains pockets and a key fob. It adds yet another bit of flair to an already gorgeous bicycle while serving a super practical purpose.

This weekend, we are hosting our good friends, N, C, and L. C and N used to live in Washington Heights when we were there. Back when The Sopranos was on, we used to do Sunday night dinners together, cooking big Italian meals and watching the newest episode together. We left the City. They moved to Brooklyn. L joined their party three years ago.

Yesterday, we picked them up from the train. This is what their suitcase looked like.
I do snap some photos here and there thinking how I would like to share them on the blog. I recently noticed that stored on my phone were some pictures I accumulated over the past months, bikey-related things that I thought might be fun to post.

So what is it we do when we are not blogging?

1. We go to NYC's Museum of Mathematics and ride tricycles with square wheels. Yup, square.

2. We participate in Mitchell Dubey's Memorial Bike Ride. We think of Mitch as we don his name on our helmets. The boys immediately dub their protective headware as Hel-Mitches.
4. We load our Boda Boda in our minivan so we can divide and conquer. We pick up P from work and drive to capoeira. We unload the bike and one of us rides another fellow to an evening meeting while the other parent stays at capoeira.
8. While the boys take the morning bus, we ride to school carrying S's guitar every Tuesday. Two fellows head home by school bus in the afternoon but since S stays late for lessons, we ride home together. S, the passenger wearing his guitar on this back, tends to get lots of attention on the return trip.
is such a pleasure to present this guest post by Kayla, another cargo bicycling mama and CT blogger. I met Kayla last fall when she bravely loaded her Madsen cargo bike and a couple of single bikes into her minivan and drove into New Haven for a Kidical Mass ride. I was most impressed to learn that she is a mama of five and was really taking on family bicycling. Her older girls and my fellas instantly bonded and I really look forward to the opportunity to riding together again.

I am a big blog reader. I love finding people that are interested in the things that I enjoy. While on my search for ways to get my family biking(read here, and here, and here). I ran across a treasure trove of biking family blogs. I was amazed at their set ups, how they got their kids to love being out and about, and most amazingly, how most of them chose to slow down their lives just a little to fit in bikes for nearly all their needs.

As I was reading these families stories, I kept hearing mention of April's 30 days of biking and how once one participated in such a challenge it was common for the "biking bug" to take over that leaves you constantly looking for ways to use your bike in the regular everyday rather than just biking for weekend recreation.

After owning my big bike for nearly a year, I was ready to see what I could really "DO" on these two wheels, and so I committed to 30 days of biking. I used that nifty Instagram to keep track. Here are our days. See if you can see the ways we were changed.

*You'll notice that I didn't include Sundays. In our family we value our Sabbath. We try to keep them holy. We attend our church meetings and spend the rest of the day together, usually at home. We try to fill the day with acts that remind us of our Savior and Creator. To read more about our Sabbath Day Observance and other commandments we value visit http://mormon.org/commandments.

Changes/Lessons learned:

I now keep my garage door clicker in my purse rather than my van visor.

I was amazed beyond amazed that it never rained on us. We've had a super dry April; bad for the yard, great for biking.

I have never been outside this much in April. With my big family, there are always, always chores to be done. I send my kiddos outside everyday to play in the backyard, but sometimes I don't make it out there myself. It sure is a shame that I let things like laundry and dishes keep me from enjoying spring properly.

My house work has suffered a bit. I started a huge project of organizing the boys clothes that has sat taking up half the basement playroom for the entire month, but whose to say that the bike is to blame. I am most likely subconciously avoiding it.

I have spoken to more of my townspeople than ever before. No one can help but smile when they see three kids in the back of a bike. I've recomended the bike shop in New Haven, Devils' Gear Bike Shop, that origionally sold my bike to it's previous owner. They don't carry Madsen's anymore, but they do carry other long-tailed, cargo carring bikes like the Yuba Mundo and Boda, Boda.

I have learned that not all bike shops are equal, and hardly any of them know anything about biking with kiddos. A big thank you to those bike blogs. Without them I would be lost and frustrated.

I have learned that location is nice(we loved our trip to DC), but not a determining factor in finding places to ride. We live at the top of an incredibly(to me) steep hill. Biking up it with my load was impossible and my biking world was a wee bit small because of all the hills I couldn't make it up, so I shopped around for help and found an electrical-assist. Now we can climb our hill and get to so many other places.

I learned that I really, really enjoy biking my daughter to preschool. It is a perfect outing. It is a short ride but it makes our day so much more exciting. No more shoving sleepy pj-clad children into carseats as my preschooler crumbles her breakfast toast all over the back seat. We get up, eat, dress, and get ready for the day-pjs do not cut it on the bike when it's 50 degrees outside, because it feels a bit like 35 and if we want to eat breakfast in the bike, no worries, the cumbs fall by the roadway.

I have learned that I can do hard things. Biking is a bit hard sometimes, physically, but that was probably the easiest challenge to overcome. The hardest part was getting out of my comfort zone and leaving our daily routine. I am carting around three young kids whereever I go. They all have fall birthdays so they are halvsies right now at 4 1/2, 3 1/2, and 18 months. Going anywhere with them is a challenge no matter how we get there. It takes planning and snacks and super duper timing to get everyone on board with an outing. Having this biking challenge got us out of our tiny home each day and I learned that my kids can actually handle more than I give them credit. I used to be afraid to leave my house after 11 in the morning because it was too near out 12:30 naptime and my boys would fall asleep in the car, be super grumpy when we arrived at our destination, and not take an afternoon nap when we returned home later. That is not really an issue with the bike. If I keep them well fed and hydrated, they can last much longer on our bike errands than ever in the car. They are out experiences the world a little bit closer and moving at a much slower rate. They get to "see" so much more. I love to hear my little one pip up with "train" every time we see any vehicle pulling a trailer of any sort.

So, in conclusion.. Loved my Biking Month.
It's been a tough winter 'round these parts. We saw an unprecedented (at least in our time) 34" snowfall that kept us off the roads for too long.

With the sun out, we donned our green and headed off to celebrate the St. Paddy's Day parade with friends. It's been our tradition to bicycle to our friends' home for the pre-parade potluck (working the alliteration here). This year the three boys rode themselves, although I remember so well the first year of the bakfiets. It got lots of attention at the party and parade.

In the end, I'm not sure if this is a bike blog photo or one ready for an album cover. We had to make a stop at the grocery store and instead of locking up five bikes, F and I opted to hang outside while the others ran in for food supplies.

Funny enough, he happens to be leaning against a post with signage reading, "No loitering. Violators will be prosecuted." I don't think anyone would take issue with a Wookie Leprechaun bicyclist waiting for his dad and brothers....
It came all the way from Clever Cycles in Portland, OR. At that time, there were no bike shops on the East Coast selling bakfietsen. Not true anymore!

We had some helpers unwrap the most awesome package we ever received.

We participated in our first Rock to Rock Earth Day Ride:
Bicycling became central to our life. We met lots of new folks. We saw far more things in our city. We had fun together.
Some months ago, I was interviewed by Melinda Tuhus, a journalist and very active bike advocate here in New Haven. Today Melinda e-mailed me to share that her article just came out as the cover story for EMagazine (The Environmental Magazine) January/February 2013 issue. I honestly had forgotten that this article was coming out and I am delighted and honored to be included in two articles on the subject of bicycling....
Feature Story: "Lugging Kids Without the Car"
I especially love that in the second article that we are in such wonderful company as Shane MacRhodes and Liz Canning. One of the things about not having a smart phone is that we do not get cool bicycling photos when we are out and about. Today, I would have liked to been able to document our adventures pictorially. It was one of those great New Haven days: church, coffee and biscotti, tree picking out and hauling, Shake Shack, and the Nutcracker at the Shubert-- all by bike.

These year, I got to ride the tree for the first time. Wild to think that we started this four years ago. It amazes me to see those photos because the boys are so young! For our past Christmas tree hauling adventures, we used our bakfiets. Since that bike is now living semi-permanently with friends, this year we used the Xtracycle Radish.

It didn't take much to load the tree. Our tree place does not wrap trees so we used a few pieces of twine to pull in some of the branches and then the amazing Freeloader straps did the rest. The stem of the tree sat far enough away from my left pedal that I didn't bump up against it at all.

It was fun riding along, the five of us, with me bringing up the rear with tree-- getting looks from other folks out on a Sunday morning. We got some great smiles and nods as we made our way downtown. We had about an hour before the Nutcracker show so P took the fellows off to the Shake Shack for burgers while I zipped home and dropped off the tree, turned around, and met up with them again.

I would have loved to get some family Christmas tree bicycle pictures but alas, here are the lone shots of the Xtra loaded with the tree. Ho Ho Ho.

We have almost fully gone to the boys riding themselves. We ride to music lessons, birthday parties, church, whatever comes our way on weekends. The guys are mostly on the sidewalk while P and I ride the street, doing a lot of communicating and blocking, particularly at street crossings and intersections.

The boys have become great city cyclists. They are pretty steady and hearty and mileage does not seem to be much of an issue. They are good at sharing the sidewalk with pedestrians, taking turns, slowing down near others, and kindly announcing, "Bike left" when coming through.

Sidewalk bicycling, of course, is not ideal and watching the boys get around by their own pedal power highlights how different life would be if we had real bicycling infrastructure 'round these parts with things like protected bike lanes. The fellows, and others, would so easily be be getting around by bicycle. For instance, right now we have no ideal bicycling route to school. My older guys are very dedicated bus riders. My youngest is not a fan of the AM bus so while I am headed to school too (I work there), F acts mostly as a passenger on my bike, and despite the years I've been doing this, I can still feel uncomfortable at times riding through downtown with anxious morning commuters.

Due to the change in our riding, we did make another bicycle change.
We got a Yuba Boda Boda. We'll have tons more stories to tell about that but we're downsizing-- the Yuba Mundo is for sale. Know any families on the East Coast looking to haul two kiddos or significant cargo that you can point our way?

The Boda Boda is tons of fun because it feels like a 'single bike' but I still have the ability to haul one kid when needed. I feel so quick and zippy on the Boda Boda! I had become so accustomed to hauling tons o' kid cargo weight these past four years, it was just the way it felt to bicycle. Now-- now's a whole 'nother story.

UPDATE 1/22/13
We did find a new home for our Yuba Mundo. It's close by and will be well-used by a family with two younger children.
I do have a few things to write about but less time outside of parenting and work to do so these days. However, good stuff in the family biking world is out there. I am often astonished, and truly delighted, to see how this has grown, both locally here in New Haven, and in many other places as evidenced by a thriving internet presence of family bicyclists.

So here you go-- another day, another blog post of another great family bicycling video. This one comes from Public Bikes, featuring a family that bicycles to school in San Francisco. What I like most about this piece is the focus of the FUN of riding bikes. We can talk about
exercise, lessened impact on the environment, dodging daunting gas prices, forming community connections, always find good
parking, etc. which are all great reasons to cycle, but truly, we
should not overlook the message that bicycling is just darn fun.
p.s. See that title, "A Family That Bikes Together...,"it kind of reminds me of one of my earliest cargo bikes t-shirt designs.
